If you’re visiting our flourishing wee city for the first time, you may not be aware of the history behind its nickname – the City of Discovery. And the story behind the name, coined in modern years and commonly used today, is really rather self-explanatory. Home of The Beano and The Dandy, our comic heritage remains important today, with The Scottish Centre for Comic Studies here, zines and comics such as Treehouse and DEE-CON, which attracts thousands of fans to this massive annual anime convention. Posing with our Desperate Dan and Minnie the Minx statues are city musts.
Once famous for its jute textiles, the city’s industrial spaces are now filled with hundreds of creatives and collectives such as Tin Roof, Rusty Hip, Fleet Collective, Generator Projects, Wasps Studios and Vanilla Ink – an incubator for emerging jewellery designers. If it doesn’t exist, make it happen, that’s the way we roll in Dundee.
Dundee city is undergoing a £1billion transformation along the River Tay. With many new businesses, restaurants, hotels, and green spaces planned. V&A Dundee will be at its heart and makes all the rubble currently on the horizon well worth it!
The hugely successful Grand Theft Auto and Lemmings series was created here in the 90s. Ever since digital start-ups and Abertay University have been at the heart of the thriving games community. Dundee has many digital pioneers, from digital toy makers Denki, to digital theatre games by Quartic Llama, to 3D mapping innovators eeGeo. Guerrilla Tea has recently launched Games in Space, a game where you help process breast cancer data as you play. A great force for good!
